"A good TV theme, DOES have Pavlovian powers!" ~ Jonathan Wolff

On this week's episode of the Smartcast we invite acclaimed musician and composer Jonathan Wolff. Jonathan is the man behind the iconic Seinfeld theme as well as having written the music for over 75 primetime series.

Creating a sonic brand is this week's theme as Jonathan discusses the many intricacies of establishing oneself as not only a musician, but also a brand in the creative arts.

Laurens Grant is a 3-time Emmy and Peabody award-winning filmmaker. She recently directed the documentary Stay Woke: The Black Lives Matter Movement for BET.


She also produced The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution, which premiered at Sundance; representing her third film to premiere at this prestigious film festival. The film opened worldwide in Fall 2015 and played a remarkable 8-week run at Film Forum in New York City. It aired on PBS’s Independent Lens series to record-breaking ratings on Feb. 16, 2016.


Previously, Grant Directed the documentary Jesse Owens, the first full-length documentary on the African-American sports icon. Jesse Owens won an Emmy for Outstanding Research, and received 2 Emmy nominations for Outstanding Historical - Long Form, and Outstanding Music and Sound.


Grant also produced the documentary Freedom Riders which premiered at Sundance, won 3 Primetime Emmys, a Peabody, was featured on Oprah, and has influenced the Hollywood films: Selma and Lee Daniels’ The Butler

 

Grant also co-produced two, 4-hour series for PBS, including the Emmy-winning Slavery and the Making of America: Seeds of Destruction, and Latin Music USA: The Chicano Wave

 

Before plunging into documentary, Grant was a foreign correspondent in Latin American. She received a Foreign Press Association Award of Merit for her coverage of Latin American politics, finance and women’s rights while working as a journalist for ReutersNewsweek, the Texas Ft. Worth Star-Telegram, the San Francisco Examiner and other publications.

 

Grant received a Bachelor of Science in Journalism with a major concentration in French language and literature from Northwestern University the Medill School of Journalism. Grant was also awarded an honorary doctor of humane letters, honoris causa, from Governors State University in Illinois. Grant speaks Spanish and French.

Loren Silber is an audio post production mixer and co-owner of Lime Studios in Santa Monica, CA.  Loren's experience began at the University of Miami where he started in the music engineering program.  His ambitions then moved towards becoming a record producer and working on albums in Los Angeles where things fell short.

After applying for several jobs around the country, Loren landed his first post production job in Chicago.  With $300 in his pocket he moved to Chicago and took the job.  Loren lived and worked in Chicago for 8 years before moving to Los Angeles.

Loren saw moving to POP Sound in Santa Monica for his own room as a mixer as a great opportunity and ceased it. Loren began building his clientele and experience in commercial mixing.

Through his experience, work ethic, and technical know-how, Loren is a "turn-key" solutions mixer that handles all elements of sound for his projects.  Through Lime Studios, Loren is able to unify a voice in collaboration and creativity for every project he's a part of.

This week Larry discusses much of Loren's experience in high end commercial and post production mixing for some of the most watched advertising material on the planet.

Steve Cantos is Vice President of Operations and Client Services currently at Sony DADC.  Steve's experience in Home Entertainment post production and international markets is discussed.  Not many people understand what happens to the packaged product after it's been completed.

Steve has held senior leadership roles overseeing staff of 100+ across numerous functional servicing areas, covering all facets of feature film and episodic content creation and distribution.  He's been head of strategic initiatives and designed several systems to improve process, efficiency, and operating profit.

 

This week we explore what it's like "post" post-production. What are some of the hurdles, obstacles, and scenarios domestic content is put under before being distributed internationally.  If you've ever been curious about how these deals are made and what type of scrutiny large film and television titles are under, make sure to listen.

Matt Temple is an established post-production sound designer, editor, supervisor and mixer with his roots in the music industry. Classically trained as a violinist early on, Matt began playing guitar from the age of 12. Originally from New York, he spent 12 years in the Boston Area playing in bands and producing artists and songwriters. He eventually took a job teaching at the renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA.
 
After playing the club scene and doing tours through Glasgow, Edinburgh, and the UK, Matt decided to relocate to Los Angeles, California. In LA Matt has become more involved with Sound Design for Film and Television. He has worked on many major motion pictures and TV shows including: St. Sebastian, Tyrant, The Tick, Second Chance, Salem, Bones, Parks and Recreation, The Office, Ultimate Rush, Good Vibes, Friends with Benefits, Sit Down Shut Up, King of the Hill, The Goode Family, Centipede, The Killer Weekend, Passion of the Christ and many more. Although his focus has shifted towards the Film and TV industry, he still enjoys producing his own musical compositions. Matt's music is computer-driven, utilizing the latest in technology. Matt composes and designs sound in his private studio in Culver City where he mixes music and film in 5.1. Matt stays involved in the music scene and has done Sound Design for Trent Reznor of NINE INCH NAILS.

Re-Recording Mixer and Musician Kevin Valentine has been nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards.

His mixing credits include: Prison Break, Mercy Street, Killing Reagan, Better Call Saul, Bones, The Good Wife, Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors, Jesse Stone: Lost in Paradise, Chasing Life, Whitney, Tyrant, Enlisted, Gossip Girl, My Boys, Charmed and Seventh Heaven to name a few.

As a drummer his credits include: Donnie Iris and The Cruisers, The Innocent (where Trent Reznor was a member before moving on to NIN), Godz, Rosie, Shadow King, Cinderella, The Lou Gramm Band (from Foreigner), Neverland, and Graham Bonnet. Kevin also played as a session musician on KISS’ Psycho Circus on all songs except for one which was played by Peter Criss.

Kevin has a unique counterpoint of having both a successful career as a musician and as a re-recording mixer. This week we delve into the art of crafting sound effects  and mixing from a musical background.

David Buckley most recently created the score for the summer action blockbuster “Jason Bourne,” directed by Paul Greengrass and starring Matt Damon. David has also scored the Sacha Baron Cohen comedy “The Brothers Grimsby,” for director Louis Leterrier, and “The Nice Guys” for Shane Black & Joel Silver. 

David's previous film credits include the Joel Schumacher-directed thrillers “Trespass” and “Blood Creek”, Ben Affleck’s crime drama “The Town”, action film “Parker” directed by Taylor Hackford, and Rob Minkoff’s fantasy adventure “The Forbidden Kingdom.” For the small screen, he has composed the music for the hit CBS drama series “The Good Wife”, “Mercy Street” for PBS and "BrainDead" for CBS.

Born in England, Buckley’s first involvement with film music was as a cathedral choirboy performing on Peter Gabriel’s score for Martin Scorsese’s THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST. He continued his musical education at Cambridge University where he subsequently taught. After graduating, he moved to London and began a successful career writing music for TV shows and commercials. In 2006, Buckley moved to Los Angeles, where he began collaborating with Harry Gregson-Williams, Danny Elfman, Hans Zimmer, and John Ottman on film scores, including “Shrek the Third,” “Flushed Away,” “The Number 23” and “Gone Baby Gone,” as well as the television specials like “Shrek the Halls.” 

He has also written music for such films as “Fifty Shades of Grey,” “Big Eyes,” “Winter’s Tale,” and “American Hustle” and his music was featured in David O’Russell’s “Joy”. His credits also include writing the music for a number of game platforms including “Batman Arkham Knight” (WB/Rocksteady). 

Buckley was recently honored as a "BRIT TO WATCH" by BAFTA and has been the recipient of numerous BMI AWARDS.

This week we talk with Jon Shiring - Software Engineer and Lead Engineer at Respawn Entertainment.

Jon's credits include shipping the highly anticipated Titanfall 2 (out October 28, 2016), Titanfall, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Call of Duty 2 and Savage. 

He has over 15 years experience in the game industry working on multiplayer titles. As a software engineer Jon has added splitscreen, sprinting, playlists, co-op (via non-blocking lockstep), and matchmaking to Call of Duty, and helped build the cloud server system and handled a significant chunk of the network code for Titanfall.

Dave's signature sound is built off experience. In knowing what to choose, how to build, layer and organize each element, helps Dave produce sounds that have become key elements in such titles as Captain America, Cinderella Man, Angels & Demons, Guilt, Living in the Age of Airplanes, NCIS: New Orleans, Blue Mountain State, and many more.

Finding the right sound effect and knowing when to "choose" the right element is key to Dave's workflow. This week listen as we explore how to reverse-engineer sound through editorial and design.

Tom started working in telecine at Compact Video in 1980. In 1985 he became Pacific Video’s first Colorist where he was privileged to test-pilot their Emmy award winning “Electronic Lab” which served as the prototype for all electronic post to this day. In 2007, he was Keep Me Posted’s first Colorist and worked there till 2013 when he joined the Modern VideoFilm team.

A veteran of over 20 years as a colorist in major facilities, Overton’s credits cover a broad range of television and feature work. He is known for his versatility in creating the look of shows as divergent as “Judging Amy” and “The Shield.” “Matlock”, “Beverly Hills, 90210” and “Melrose Place”. He's timed “Northern Exposure”, “Beauty and the Beast”, “The Shield”, and more recently, “Gossip Girl”, “Californication”, “Witches of East End” and “Scorpion.” He has also color timed many TV Movies and mini-series including “Mama Flora’s Family”, “Doing Time on Maple Drive”, and “What Girls Learn” as well as KCET’s award winning mini-series “The Astronomers”. He has also worked on a long list of Disney Channel movies including “High School Musical 1 & 2”

Juliet Landau is a multifaceted actress, director, and producer.

Having co-starred in Tim Burton’s “Ed Wood” and opposite Whoopi Goldberg in “Theodore Rex” Juliet is a creative talent not only in her acting, but the characters she portrays and takes on.

She created and played the role of Drusilla with Joss Whedon on “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” and “Angel” over the course of six seasons discussing with us what it's like acting in television.

Juliet directed the documentary "Take Flight" about and for Gary Oldman covering his creative process and co-directed "Dream Out Loud", which features interviews from the likes of Guillermo del Toro, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Rian Johnson.

Christopher French is a multi-instrumentalist and composer from San Jose, California. As a teenage guitarist, he started writing songs with a 4-track tape recorder in his bedroom. He spent his formative years touring with punk and alternative rock bands, developing his stage presence and voice, both as a singer and as a songwriter.

 

He currently composes the score for the half hour comedy Young and Hungry, on Freeform, he composed the music for short films Limina and Condolences, composed the song Welcome to The Night, which is featured in the film Authors Anonymous, the theme for Life Flight on Lifetime, the music on commercials for Summer’s Eve, Advance Auto Parts and several Fruit of the Loom spots,

 

Chris is also a music Producer for British indie folk singer Josh Beech, Actress/Singer Ashley Tisdale, Bluebird aka Brianna Cuoco, the bands Whisper City, a duo with Kyle Moorman, Annie Automatic and Palmerston.

 

Chris plays guitar, keyboards, sings with an impressive range, writes, produces and mixes music.

Chris’ credits include UnREAL, Speechless, Recovery Road, Modern Family, Legends, Heroes Reborn, The Bastard Executioner, Nicky, Ricky, Dicky and Dawn, Girl Meets World, Whitney and has most recently supervised and edited sound for Hulu's East Los High.  Chris has also cut effects for the feature film There are Monsters mixed at the new Smart Post West in Santa Monica, CA.

 

This is full resume for a guy that has been doing this for four years. Chris attended The Art Institute of California in Santa Monica after working at the railroad for many years prior. He has risen to excellence after interning, followed by some time in the M&E/ deliverables department at Smart Post Sound.

 

Joe Melody was his teacher at The Art Institute and had Chris as a pupil, saw potential and eventually helped him get his foot in the door at the company he presides over.

 

Chris’ passion, dedication to the job, and ability to learn quickly have all made him a phenomenal editor at an early stage in his career. His willingness to be mentored by more experienced editors, supervisors, and mixers has fast-tracked his rise as an editor.

 

Chris is very musical, plays guitar by ear, and this musical gift is utilized as an editor and supervisor.

Erich Gann has been nominated for 2 Primetime Emmy, 3 Golden Reel Award. Having won an MPSE Golden Reel award for Kurt Sutter's “Sons of Anarchy” which aired on FX Networks.

Erich has supervised the sound for the television shows “The Bastard Executioner”, “Sons of Anarchy”, “Agent X”, “UnReal”, “Angie Tribeca” and “Cooper Barrett’s Guide to Surviving Life” and has also provided the editorial for “Fresh Off The Boat”, “Heroes Reborn” and “Switched at Birth” among many more.

Erich is a multi-instrumentalist who has a great ear for all things audio.  He performs regularly throughout the Los Angeles area with his band and is a true purist in sound authenticity.

Aaron Levy and Ethan Beigel became partners at Todd-AO and have continued their partnership at Smart Post Sound. They work out of one of our 4-wall facilities, Bang Zoom in Burbank.

They are very busy and last season mixed the equivalent of 9 days over the course of 7. Years ago they started out as sound recordists providing stage support for various stages, with Aaron starting out at Todd-AO and Ethan at Novastar after transplanting from New York.

Now they are one of the busiest mixing crews in Los Angeles. They both can edit and supervise projects and have a passion for whatever projects they’re on. Aaron and Ethan feel equally comfortable mixing hit network television shows or feature films and documentaries.

Rick also has designed software to help the post industry with the creation of a program that generates cue sheets from ProTools for ADR and Foley recording, a sound effects database management and editorial system and more recently forming Smart Post Video - working with industry professionals to create visual effects. 

Rick's passion and drive make him a sought after sound designer and inventor.

Peter Kelsey is a Re-Recording Mixer specializing in dialog and music with a background as a recording engineer at Trident Studios for over 30years in London, England and then becoming a scoring mixer in Los Angeles, CA.  Peter has won 4 Emmy awards, and has been nominated 7 times for both Emmy and CAS awards.

 

His Television credits include Cooper Barrett’s Guide to Surviving Life, Stitchers, Kevin from Work, The Middle, The Crazy Ones, Harry’s Law, My Name is Earl, Boston Legal, Arrested Development and Ally McBeal to name a few.

 

His musical career includes working on the final mixes of Elton John’s Yellow Brick Road and many albums with Jean-Luc Ponty, as well as producing two albums for Bill Ward, the drummer from Black Sabbath.

 

Peter is also an energy healer and is working towards public speaking professionally.

Brin Hill has created projects for companies as diverse as HBO Films, Miramax, ESPN, Warner Bros., Nike, Visa, Powerade, Bombay Gin, Adobe, Intel, the NBA, the NFL, Toyota, Cadillac, Red Bull, and Beats By Dre to name a few. 

His short film “Morning Breath” earned him a Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival.  He directed “In Your Eyes”, written and executive produced by Joss Whedon for  Bellwhether Pictures that Whedon runs with producer Kai Cole.

Brin recently wrote two films inspired by true events: WON’T BACK DOWN (20th Century Fox) and BATTLE OF THE YEAR: THE DREAM TEAM (Screen Gems/Sony Pictures). 

Hill also adapted and directed the much acclaimed YA novel BALL DON'T LIE.
